Hip-hop Ghostwriting No More A Taboo

From the very early days of Hip-hop, Ghostwriting was always looked as taboo. The DJs who were once the center of attention in Hip-hop, lost their top spots the minute they passed the torch to the MCs (Masters of Ceremony). The MCs thus became the center and started to gain more confidence in themselves. They commanded the crowd’s attention causing a more increased visibility of Hip-hop itself. It became apparent that the responsibility of an MC was not simply to move a crowd and tell them to “put your hands in the air”. They soon realized that they had to come with catchy and hot lyrics. But even more importantly, they had to write their own lyrics. As more players entered the game the competition soon increased and everyone was soon fighting for the crown of being the best.
There was 1 universal law – MCs must write their own rhymes. Last year Drake and Meek Mill exchanged diss records in which Meek- who was clearly defeated accused the Canadian based rapper of using ghostwriters. His loss resulted in Mills becoming a laughing stock. He was the butt of all jokes and one could not get unto social media without seeing all the hilarious memes of such lost. The NBA, NFL, and sports players everywhere chimed in via social media and proudly named Drake the Champ even before Meek was able to respond.
Enter 2017 and the tables have turned. Queen’s raised and first lady of Young Money, Nicki Minaj took a few jabs at the Bronx native and costar of Love & Hip Hop’s Remy Ma. This past winter Minaj and Meek’s romance came to an end. Though she supported Meek through his major loss against Drake. It seems as if he has not done the same. In Remy Ma’s vicious SHEther diss track, she mentions that Meek told her that he and Nicki had to abstain from sex. “And I saw Meek at All-Star, he told me your ass dropped/ He couldn’t fuck you for three months because your ass dropped.” She goes on to add “To be the queen of rap, you can’t have a ghostwriter”. Remy continued to attack the Pills and Potions star as she raps in SHEther. “Got your ghostwriters back, so you think you lit.”
Needless to say in this social media age, ghostwriting is becoming less of a taboo. We have since learned that some of our favorite MCs have been using ghostwriters and most of us are ok with that. We have since forgotten that true rap battles were delivered with no pen, no pad and were head on and face to face. However seeing that these two artists are completely different and have different followings. We are graciously awaiting a response from Nick Minaj. Will she answer Remy, we are unsure. However we can most definitely say that we were all tuned in for this exchange and one thing for certain is that is good for the culture.
